About

How do we share a space with someone who is not there? In Noire / Colored, the story of Claudette Colvin unfolds around the visitor. In Playing with Fire, virtuoso pianist Yuja Wang's recorded performance connects a physical piano to imagined worlds.
Director Pierre-Alain Giraud goes behind the scenes of these two immersive works, tracing the choices that turn an absent person into a felt presence. For Noire / Colored, he explores writing and staging in augmented reality, developing the technology, and a volumetric shoot in Taiwan that involved casting historical figures such as Claudette Colvin and Martin Luther King. For Playing with Fire, his first VR production, he discusses recording Yuja Wang and building imaginary worlds around a real musical performance, within the tight limits of standalone headsets.
Through photographs, trailers and production footage, the talk looks at collaboration across artistic and technical disciplines, contrasting production processes and the decisions that shaped each experience.
